Kids U - Summer 2021: Literacy Academy Camp

If you love to read or if you want to work on being a strong reader, join us as we read a variety of works form different authors. Every day we will spend time reading independently as well as working together to analyze and discuss readings that will appeal to everyone. We will be blogging and reviewing books using Goodreads so that we can be a part of a great book readers' community. This class is designed for tweens and young teens. All levels of readers are welcome! Don’t get caught by the summer slump! Read! Read! Read!

Emma Sobey

Students will use their close reading skills to improve their abilities in inferencing and using deductive reasoning by learning to solve a variety of mysteries, logic puzzles, and strategy games.  The class will focus on reading short stories, playing hands-on mystery games (like Clue), and completing logic and critical thinking puzzles to help students learn about the clues authors use in order to get messages across to their readers.

Come and discover the secrets found in the garden of great books! Join us in this hands-on session where students will create a variety of books modeled after some of the best writers of our time. Each day will consist of whole class reading, discussion, pre-writing, and the creation of a book by each child.

Sarah Burch

Did you know that most authors keep journals in which they record things they want to write about later? Learn how to notice things around you and develop your creative, descriptive vocabularies, jot down your memories and observations, and use those notes to write your own book. Join the ranks of bona fide authors by starting your own writer's notebook including a personal vocabulary wall.

Dever

Each day the poets-in-training will investigate the vast universe of poetry through children’s literature. After each investigation, the poets will create their own poetry piece with illustrations. At the end of the camp, the authors will have a finished book of their poetry.

Grab your safety goggles and apron and let’s see what we can mix up! Students will be immersed in literature and labs. We will explore characters and science together. Join us for a literacy and science adventure.

Bring your sleeping bag and thirst for writing! Each day campers will work on a story inspired by a nature walk. At the end of the day everyone will share their story around the tissue paper 'campfire'.
