SAMHSA Mental Health First Aid

UHCL has been awarded a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) to provide a free eight (8) hour Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training to faculty, staff, students and the community. Mental Health First Aid is included on SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an 8-hour training to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps faculty and staff identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This course is specifically designed for individuals who work with youth.

This MHFA training will help faculty and staff learn:

  • 5 risk factors and warning signs of mental health and substance use problems
  • Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis and substance use
  • A 5-step action plan to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or in crisis
