SAMHSA Mental Health First Aid

UHCL has been awarded a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) to provide a free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training to faculty, staff, students and the community. Mental Health First Aid is included on SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an 8- hour training to teach participants how to help youth who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps faculty and staff identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. You MUST attend the entire session to receive certification.

This MHFA training will help students, faculty, and staff learn:

  • How to identify signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use problems
  • Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis and substance use
  • A 5-step action plan to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or in crisis
