SAMHSA Mental Health First Aid

UHCL has been awarded a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) to provide a free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training to faculty, staff, students and the community. Mental Health First Aid is included on SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an 8- hour training to teach participants how to help adults who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps servicemembers, veterans, family members, faculty, staff, students, and the community understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Family members and personnel working with military and families are often not aware of how to engage veterans with mental illnesses and addictions. In addition to the impact of military service on the veteran, each has a circle of family and friends who are also impacted by their military service.

Additionally, Mental Health First Aid offers a tailored curriculum module that builds upon the effectiveness of the standard Mental Health First Aid curriculum by focusing on the unique experiences and needs of the veteran, service member and family population. You MUST attend the entire session to receive certification.

This MHFA training will help students, faculty, and staff learn:

  • How to identify signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use problems
  • Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis and substance use
  • A 5-step action plan to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or in crisis
  • Self-care help and available evidence-based professional and peer resources

Please Note- There will be various discussions throughout the duration of this training. Some of the topics discussed may include sensitive content.
