SAMHSA Mental Health First Aid

UHCL has been awarded a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) to provide a free eight (8) hour Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training to faculty, staff, students and the community. Mental Health First Aid is included on SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an 8-hour training to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps faculty and staff identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

This MHFA training will help faculty and staff learn:

  • 5 risk factors and warning signs of mental health and substance use problems
  • Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis and substance use
  • A 5-step action plan to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or in crisis
  • Available evidence-based professional, peer and self-help resources

Please Note- There will be various discussions throughout the duration of this training. Some of the topics discussed may include sensitive content.

Session Information:

The upcoming session will be fully virtual. This session will consist of 2-2 ½ hours of self-paced prework, followed by two 3-hour, instructor- led zoom session. Registration for this training will close on: Monday, September 27, 2021.

This session will be broken up into three parts:

  • Part 1: 2/2.5-hour Self-paced course work- This portion is a requirement to attend the instructor led portion. (Whether virtual or in-person).

    The pre-work for this session must be completed on, or no later than Thursday, September 30, 2021.
    You MUST complete pre-work before attending the instructor led session. 
  • Part 2: Monday, October 4, 2021. This session will be VIRTUAL.

  • Part 3: Tuesday, October 5, 2021. This session will be VIRTUAL.

A minimum class size of eight (8) participants is required for this course. If fewer than eight (8) participants are registered, the class will be canceled.
